Living Roots is an Ahmedabad based environment focused studio, driven by experienced design and ecology professionals with 20 plus years of experience. With its ecological footprints, Living Roots has enhanced the urban environment and its living conditions. We take up the urban voids, public places and private properties in the city and transform them into functional community landscapes of bio-diverse species, native micro-forest eco systems, multi-layered organic vegetation and rain water catchment basins supported by the natural systems of healing and harvesting. Such landscapes thrive on well researched native potent vegetation palette, are low on maintenance, are budget conscious and in turn, replenish the mother earth. The lab like environment of the studio encourages us to observe, inquire, adapt and unlearn from the extensive field studies and research. A team of dynamic, young and experienced professionals from the fields of architecture, landscape, urban planning, horticulture, irrigation and associated landscape services is our biggest strength and a source of continuous energy that feeds into new innovative ideas to better the urban environmental conditions. We are a young emerging professional studio with dynamic team eager to learn and apply from the nature’s best !!!

Our Story

For last 20 plus years, vide professional practice, research and academia Ar. Anal has advocated and demonstrated sustainable design and development practices. At work, she has re-imagined and shaped cities as the common grounds of functional landscapes. Land-escapes that heal and harvest energy through pilot initiatives like, green mobility plans, sustainable city/ township master plans and guidlines, people centruc community parks, food forests, thematic pocket forest parks within urban voids, self-seeded landscapes, experimental herbal and vegetable gardens, bio-diversity parks, land filled sites adn block landscapes that recycle and re-use ewaste as a potential resource, permeable streetscape design and guidlines. Having extensively worked with large scale public service and corporate projects, she realised a genuine gap in the industry and practice. Green city brands are a popular tool for municipal leaders and city managers to promise a better quality of life and increase its competitive advantage. However, lesser is the real concern to bring the environmental good in its truest sense and least are the policy initiatives in developing countries like India. Moreover, its slow acceptance and low economies of scale are a few commonly faced constraints. There are a few tools, very few thinkers and fewer innovations.
